Darkes Forest Riding Ranch and Boarding stables 30 min South of Sydney, 30 min north of Wollongong was established in 1971. 

For over 45 years our family owned and operated horse riding ranch, set in native bushland is a great place to enjoy a horse ride or a horse riding lesson. 

We have experienced ride leaders and instructors that are keen to share their love of horses with people of all ages and experience levels. 

There are activities and classes designed especially for children.  We also offer lessons for beginners and advanced riders of all ages. We cater for both horse ride and pony ride birthday parties.

We have a kiosk on site, so stay for lunch or have a coffee and read the paper.

What Is the Minimum Age for Horse Riding at the Ranch?

Trail rides are open to riders aged 7 and over. Children aged 6 can ride one-on-one with an instructor only. Pony lead-line rides are available for children aged 7 and under, including toddlers who can sit and hold their own weight.

Is There a Weight Limit to Ride?

Yes. Our weight limit is 100kg. If you're over 90kg, please call us on 0428 943 441 before booking so we can confirm your place. Horse welfare is non-negotiable at Darkes Forest Ranch, and rides can be declined if it is required.

Do I Need to Bring a Helmet?

No. Helmets are provided for all riders at no extra charge. We ask that you wear closed-toe shoes or boots and appropriate clothing for a bush ride.

Do You Need Experience to Book a Trail Ride Near Wollongong?

No experience is needed. Our ride leaders and instructors work with all skill levels. If you haven't been on a horse before, just let us know when you book and we'll set you up with the right horse and the right guidance.
